Skin's 2007 Draft

What were the Redskins thinking this year? Here are their picks:

ROUND    PICK        NAME            POSITION        SCHOOL
1         Pick 6      LaRon Landry     DS            FSU
2        None
3        None
4        None
5        143        Dallas Sartz        OLB            Southern Cal
6        179        H.B. Blades         OLB            Pittsburgh
6        205        Jordan Palmer     QB             Texas El-Paso
7        216        Tyler Ecker         TE              Michigan

What? This did NOT address the ‘Skins their biggest needs on the D-Line. Yes the secondary did need some help and I’m not disputing their Round 1 Pick. Hopefully Landry will be much better in coverage than Arculeta was last year.  If he gels well and everyone stays healthy and out of jail this could put the Secondary over the top. Landry, Sean Taylor, Shawn Springs, and Carlos Rogers all out on the field at the same time could be fierce.

But what is with drafting two OLBs? I understand the Linebacking core is getting old. But I thought is was pretty much set for at least a season or two with Marcus Washington, bringing in London Fletcher, and drafting Rocky McIntosh last year. Not to mention having Lemar Marshall as a pseudo starter. The Skins needed some depth and youth but they could have waiting for a later pick, AFTER drafting one or two D linemen.

The Redskins D-Line was one of the worst in the league. Look at Football Outsiders breakdown of D-Lines here: D-Line Rankings. Andre Carter came on at the end of last year at LE, so he might actually work out. But  Phillip Daniels at the RE declined last year and is already 33.  And his backup Demetric Evans has never shown much of anything special. Maybe Renaldo Wynn could move over from LE since he lost his starting spot to Andre Carter but he’s old too. Here was a huge team need that they missed. They should have traded for picks, or not acquiring Brandon Lloyd (That would solve a lot of problems.)

The also should have picked up a DT late. Cornelius Griffin is a good Defensive Tackle but he is 30 and a bit injury prone. He generally plays through, but what would happen if got injured for a long period of time? The other Starter is Kedrick Golston. He showed some promise last year and might turn out well. Their best backup at this position is Joe Salave’a. I really like him a lot, but he’s more of a hard worker then a talented player. The Redskins needed a rookie that could be inserting in the starting lineup and be effective if Golston or Griffin went down. They also need someone to look for someone to take over for Griffin in a few years.

The selection of QB and TE was alright in my opinion. The Skins needed some more depth at those positions. But they also needed to get a 3 Wideout.  Brandon Lloyd did not work at last year and it would probably be best for him and the team if he just got of Washington.  Randle El and Moss are good receivers, but Moss missed two games last year and Randle El did not step up when that happened. They need another guy who can take some pressure off and be a third option.

Hopefully the Skins are going to acquire some of their needs in Free Agency because I cannot see them going very far right now.
